I'd disagree, there's a high risk of some very negative results coming from the governments interference. If they wanted to support the Iranian cause they would either a) Hold diplomatic meetings with the regime's and try to create a solution, which would be ineffectual b) Supply and support the opposition movement which could cause a long, protracted civil war with many casualties or c) invade (unlikely but an option) which is just another problem.
Also the person they're trying to vote in is hardly the paragon of goodness and righteousness, he's the lesser of two evils but I'm not sure he's worth mass bloodshed over.
Personally I think staying out of this is the best course for the time being, Iran has a strong anti-west sentiment and if we help one side or the other even if they're successful we risk weakening their regime and claim and destabilizing the situation even more.
